10. Tanhayee – Sonu Nigam
“Tanhayee” is from the multi award winning 2001 comedy/dramatic film, “Dil Chahta Hai”, starring Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna, and directed by Farhan Akhtar. The soundtrack is considered one of the most influential in Bollywood history, and the song “Tanhayee” is considered as one of the saddest in Bollywood films. Composed by Shankar Ehsaan Loy, with lyrics by Javed Akhtar, the song revolves around the feeling when loneliness embraces one for the first time during the coming of age years of ones youth.
9. Wo Shaam Kuch Ajeeb thi – Kishore Kumar
The 1969 black and whilte Hindi drama, “Khamoshi” was directed by Asit Sen and starred Waheeda Rehman. The soundtrack was composed by Hermant Kumar and Gulzar and one of the most memorable songs of this soundtrack was “Wo Shaam Kuch Ajeeb thi”. Vocals are hauntingly performed by Kishore Kumar, and the song as a whole is beautifully orchestrated to suit the mood of the scene as they sail upon the waters, contemplating their lives in flashbacks.

“Mera Kuch Saaman” is a song from the 1988 Hindi film, “Ijaazat”. The premise is an intriguing one, as it involves a couple on a journey of self discovery in a railway station. The song was composed by R.D Burman and Gulzar, and performed by Asha Bhosle. The song centers on a poem found in a letter from a former lover, involving memories and thoughts of time spent together. The song “Tadap Tadap Ke” is from the 1999 romantic Bollywood film, “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam”, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, starring Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai. Composed by Ismail Darbar with lyrics by Mehboob, the song is memorable, gentle and soulful, and reflects the emotions which occur when miscommunications and misundertandings come between lovers, with the regrets forever remaining, and their pain forever stamped upon their souls.

Though the 1959 film, “Kaagaz Ke Phool”, directed by Guru Dutt did not win fans at the box office, the song from the film, “Waqt Ne Kiya Kya Haseen Sitam” did. “Waqt Ne Kiya Kya Haseen Sitam” was composed by S.D. Burman with lyrics by Kaifi Azmi, and sings of the intricacies of romantic love. Geeta Dutt’s vocals almost seem to reach inside your soul, in a determined yet delicate fashion. “Hum Bewafa Hargiz Na Thay” is from the soundtrack of the 1978 Bollywood film, “Shalimar” starring Dharmendra and Zeenat Aman. There is a huge emotion we feel when we realize that when she sings, she is expressing her inability to find real love, being forced into the life of a courtesan at a young age with no hope for change. An amazing track, and one based on the reality of a real woman, who lost her chances in life, through no fault of her own.
An absolutely wonderful foray into the musical heritage of Bollywood. Songs of loss, heartbreak, sorrow and regret, told only as the Bollywoods masters of their craft can. While we usually see songs of joy and love in Bollywood films, sometimes there also exists a tear waiting to be shed, captured and cherished by the viewer.
